My other leads turn up empty as well and I am becoming frustrated. Iris returns to work in a few weeks and I’ll have less control over her surroundings and be less able to protect her.

I growl, startling a ground squirrel back into its hole. I shift back into human form and walk the rest of the way to my car, breathing deeply to calm myself. I’m calm by the time I reach the truck but I’m also resolved to talk to the investigators. It’s taking too long to figure this out. As I do, I find myself hoping that the lion from the other day might show up and see a naked human as easy prey. It’s a silly, overly aggressive thing to want to kill a cat just so I can work out some frustration but, on the other hand, worry about that girl is getting to me.
